Despite all the deepwater allure, opportunities remain in the shallow water sector, which still accounts for an estimated 90% of all offshore oil produced.
The bulk of offshore work in Southeast Asia and the Middle East Gulf takes place in shallow waters, where anchor handling tug supply (AHTS) vessels dominate. According to research presented by Harald Paulsen Lovik, general manager of Fearnleys Offshore Supply Asia, 1,474 of the 2,255 AHTS units in service today are shallow-water vessels of less than 8,000 bhp.
