With the number of regional Emission Control Areas (ECAs) set to increase with the addition of Hong Kong this year, a new report suggests that scrubbers are not the best alternative compliance method available to shipowners.
Research by German environmental group Nabu indicates that although scrubbers are efficient in cleaning sulphur oxides (SOx) emissions, the discharge of waste wash water puts another type of pollution into the sea.
