Ship operators need to be prepared to cope with growing mass migrant rescues but the issue is not proving particularly expensive.

Protection-and-indemnity (P&I) club rules generally cover the additional costs of helping people in distress at sea and taking them to a nearby port, said the North of England P&I Association in a briefing this week.

“We are normally talking about quite minor costs coverable under P&I,” deputy director of claims Belinda Ward told TradeWinds.
