Members of the European Parliament this week took a positive step towards helping the shipping industry cut its greenhouse-gas emissions by approving draft rules to force owners to monitor and report carbon dioxide (CO2) produced by their ships when they call in Europe’s ports.
But the hostile reaction of several major shipowner associations to what, it should be remembered, was a decision taken by democratically elected representatives, was as predictable and naive as it was depressing.
