The most current newbuildings are the 60,200-dwt Ionic United and Ionic Unicorn slated for delivery from Mitsui Shipbuilding in January and March.

“They’re definitely going to be our flagship vessels,” said Ionic managing director Spyros Vlassopoulos.

However, alongside the ultramaxes, Ionic has also booked a pair of 84,000-dwt post-panamax bulkers at Imabari Shipbuilding’s Marugame plant, as well as a lone 114,600-dwt tanker at Namura Shipbuilding earlier this year that is due for delivery in June 2016.
