The Akaki, on charter to Glencore, had loaded a cargo of corn at the port when it suffered an explosion in the cargo hold at the end of December.
The protection-and-indemnity (P&I) club issued a loss-prevention note alerting members that such explosions can be caused by failure to distribute fumigation pellets.
Head of the North of England’s loss prevention team Tony Baker said: “Failure to disperse the fumigant pellets properly has led to self-heating problems.
