Reederei Nord is doubling its tally of sub-panamax boxships on order in China but is opting for gearless vessels with greater reefer capacity at a different yard.

The Hamburg-based owner has inked a $200m-plus deal for up to seven 2,500-teu, wide-beam vessels at Avic Weihai Shipyard.

The ships are similar to Nord’s earlier order in China for six Shanghai Merchant Ship Design & Research Institute (SDARI)-design 2,500-teu units but have 40% more reefer capacity and are not fitted with cranes.
