Maersk Line caused quite a stir when it announced in January that its Hong Kong office would take on the role of Asian regional headquarters, with Singapore downgraded to the status of a country cluster office overseeing its Southeast Asian business activities.
The announcement, which came hot on the heels of several offshore players saying they were leaving for cheaper locations elsewhere in Asia, prompted fears that Singapore was losing its competitive edge among owners.
