China’s HNA Group must pay Shagang Shipping $68.6m to settle a capesize charterparty dispute that has become tainted by allegations of bribery and torture by Chinese police, the London High Court has ruled.
Judge Sir Robin Knowles has ruled HNA must pay out on a charterparty guarantee made by its now-defunct Grand China Shipping arm to Shagang Shipping, which is now in liquidation, over the charter of the 179,300-dwt bulker Dong-A Astrea (built 2010) in August 2008.
