After almost four years of informal enquiry, the European Union (EU) is set to launch a formal investigation into Greece’s shipping tax regime, with a view to restrict tonnage tax to fewer maritime companies and scrap tax exemptions for shipping company shareholders.

The European Commission (EC), which acts as the EU’s competition watchdog, is “likely to take the next step in the procedure and open a formal state aid investigation”, said EU transport commissioner Violeta Bulc in a joint press conference with Theodore Veniamis, president of the Union of Greek Shipowners (UGS), on the final day of Posidonia.
