The Polys Hajioannou-led company raised $16.9m from an unknown investor to cover a substantial portion of the cost of a kamsarmax.
Fotis Giannakoulis, analyst at Morgan Stanley, said: “We have not seen anything like that from another public company. Maybe private companies do the same?”
Safe Bulkers is paying a mystery investor a dividend of 2.95%, below the 8% it pays on its other series of preferred shares.
