A new, larger breed of methanol carrier is on the drawing board.

TradeWinds is told that an unnamed Chinese company has approached several domestic shipyards for a ship design of 100,000 dwt.

The request is said to have caused a “stir”, as the typical size of methanol carriers currently in use is between 13,000 dwt and 50,000 dwt.

“There may be a few panamax-size vessels that are able to transport methanol but they rarely get traded,” said one player.
