The UK system of an independent salvage expert taking control of maritime casualties has seen off another potential environmental disaster with the successful salvage of the rig Transocean Winner.

Hugh Shaw, Secretary of State Representative for Maritime Salvage and Intervention — or SOSREP — took control of co-ordinating the complex salvage operation as soon as the 30-year-old, 17,000-ton drilling rig broke from its tow on 8 August and washed up on the rocks off Dalmore Beach on Scotland’s west coast.
