The International Maritime Organization (IMO)’s new rules regarding the discharge of ballast water aim to get rid of invasive species — but they may also remove part of the world’s excess ship supply.

Fearnley Securities says the IMO’s new ballast-water management rules are a “potential positive” for the shipping market as owners will “think twice about putting their 15 and 20-year-old vessels” in drydock to install ballast-water management systems (BWMS).
