Cyprus has launched its first maritime academy as it looks to tempt more young people to start a maritime career.

The inauguration of the Cyprus Maritime Academy was celebrated during a ceremony held at the Bernhard Schulte Shipmanagement training centre in Limassol.

Captain Eberhard Koch, chairman of the board of governors, said the establishment of the CMA offers the younger generation the opportunity of a "truly respectable career at sea".

He added that this could offset the prospective shortfall of seafarers by 2025, which has been projected by industry experts.
