More containerships are today out of work than ever before.

The inactive containership fleet surged to a record high of 524 vessels totalling 2.65m teu as of 11 May, according to Alphaliner figures.

That surpasses the previous record of 2.46m teu notched up at the beginning of March when the impact of the coronavirus was beginning to be felt.

The rise is due to the combined effects of the coronavirus and ongoing scrubber refits of vessels still idle in shipyards.
