Consultancy Alphaliner has revealed an increase in the number of inactive containerships globally, but dismissed any suggestion this means a lessening of insatiable demand for vessels.

Following very moderate rises through August, the commercially idle fleet has now hit 176 ships of about 686,000 teu.

This is still a very small part of the total fleet at 2.8%.

"In the current environment, these minor increases are not indicative of a weakening tonnage demand," Alphaliner said.
