Increased volumes across all its trades — and especially to China — helped Matson to a hefty third-quarter profit.

The Hawaiian boxship owner reported $283m in net income, or $6.53 on a per share basis — nearly four times the $70.9m profit recorded in the same period last year.

The performance, including $1.1bn in revenue, was boosted by a 22% year-on-year increase in container volume in the company's California-China Express service.
