Singapore’s Pacific Container Lines (PIL) is aiming to widen its low-carbon fuel options with a biofuel trial.

The company said its 3,566-teu boxship Kota Megah (built 2013) loaded a blend of fatty acid methyl esters (FAME) and very low sulphur fuel oil (VLSFO) in Singapore on 10 April.

The main aim of the test is to assess the feasibility of using the biofuel and obtaining data on the potential emissions reductions that can be achieved through a “drop-in” solution.
