Italian shipowners could receive tax breaks in return for implementing sustainability measures.
The suggestion was made by vice minister for infrastructure and transport, Edoardo Rixi, according to the ANSA news agency.
Speaking at the Shipping and the Law conference in Naples, he said the move could be made to recognise the delicate objective of preserving the environment as new IMO low-sulphur rules come into effect in 2020.
