Italian shipowners are calling on the country's government for help in the wake of the coronavirus lockdown on Monday.

The call comes as shipowners warn that the nation’s ports could face huge losses if vessel traffic continues to fall.

The lockdown has made it practically impossible for crews to reach vessels and is preventing seafarers from obtaining the certification needed to sail aboard Italian-flag vessels, Mario Mattioli, president of the Italian Shipowners' Association, Confitarma, said.
