Nearly 100 tonnes of bombs were dropped every day on Valletta's Grand Harbour in Malta at the start of 1942 and the number of civilians killed by German air attacks was running at 230 per month.
The tiny Mediterranean island was uniquely for a country awarded the George Cross by the UK government for the bravery of its inhabitants and providing the Allies with a vital shipping link in the Mediterranean.
