On 7 October 1964, the Methane Princess arrived at Canvey Island, southeast England, from Algeria, carrying the world’s first commercial cargo of LNG.

From this highly experimental vessel and its sister, the Methane Progress, the world fleet has mushroomed to nearly 550 LNG carriers, including just shy of 140 newbuildings, ranging from 1,500-cbm coastal ships to Qatar’s 14 Q-Max giants of 265,000-cbm.

The
