A Mexican charterer has asked a US court to block arbitration by Hornbeck Offshore Services after the US shipowner tried to push it into bankruptcy protection to recover unpaid charter hire.

Offshore service company Drebbel de Mexico filed a lawsuit in the US federal court for the Eastern District of Louisiana on 26 August asking a judge to rule Hornbeck waived its arbitration rights when it sued in Mexico last year in a failed attempt to push into Chapter 11 reorganisation.
