AP Moller-Maersk plans to take part in further container industry consolidation following its takeover of Hamburg Sud, its chief executive says.

Soren Skou told the company's capital markets day at the Copenhagen Opera House more consolidation would happen due to economies of scale and competitors not generating a return on investment.

"We would also like to participate," Skou said.

"We have to integrate Hamburg Sud and demonstrate the business case for making that acquisition before we consider additional deals at this time.
