A record number of tankers are likely to be demolished this year, according to Paris-based market analyst Alphatanker.

While the analyst believes the rate of scrapping will likely slow, it predicts many more vessels will be torched.

Its outlook is based on the assumption that the challenging tanker market environment will persist into the second quarter.

The analyst expects more than 130 tankers larger than 34,000 dwt will be removed from the fleet, and that demolition prices will remain “relatively robust” due to the dearth of alternative tonnage being demolished.
