A stop in Canada was not enough to save an oil company from paying a $10m Jones Act fine for moving a rig between two US points using a foreign-flag vessel for most of the journey.

Acting US Attorney Bryan Schroder announced that Furie Operating Alaska has agreed to pay the fine over the move of the Spartan 151 jack-up drilling rig from the US Gulf to Alaska in 2011 without a waiver of US cabotage law.
