When Clipper Group approached Flensburger Schiffbau-Gesellschaft (FSG) to build more of the same ro-ro ferries it had previously ordered in Spain, the German yard declined.

It admitted it could not match the Spanish on price but needed the opportunity to demonstrate it could do a better job, says FSG executive vice-president Wolfgang Buhr.

"In the same dimensions we could add more trailers and reduce the required power by 2,000 kW," he said.
