The west coast of South America will add new containership capacity as port operator DP World signed a new concession for a deepwater facility in Ecuador.

The Dubai-based company won a 50-year concession to build a greenfield, multi-purpose port at Posorja, which is 65 kilometres (40 miles) to the southwest of the country’s capitol Guayaquil.

The first phase of the $1bn project will include land purchases, dredging of new access channel, roads and a 400-metre berth for containerships and other cargo.
