The German merchant fleet has shrunk for the third consecutive year, according to new figures from the German Shipowners’ Association (VDR).
The fleet now numbers 3,122 vessels, a 17% decline from its zenith in 2012, while the volume of transport capacity has declined by 12%.
“The decline in the size of our merchant fleet is a disturbing development,” said VDR president Alfred Hartmann.
