Salvage companies are waiting for Italian shipowner Nuova Naviservice to award a contract for the removal of one of its general cargoships that grounded on rocks in Sardinia last December.

A total of 15 salvage companies are said to have submitted bids for the contract, which is expected to cost about €1m ($1.08m).

Salvage sources suggest the company’s delay in awarding the contract may be due to Italy’s lockdown to tackle coronavirus.
