A Eurobulk boxship has rescued the crew of a Turkish-owned multipurpose (MPP) vessel that suffered an engine-room explosion.

Northwester Shipping’s 5,400-dwt Southwester (built 1998) is now believed to have sunk.

A senior executive for Eurobulk said the Southwester issued a distress call at 11pm (2300 GMT) on Wednesday night when it was about 50 nautical miles (93 km) off the Portuguese city of Porto.
