P&O Ferries made all 800 of its UK seafarers redundant in a three-minute video call, as claims emerged of ultra-low wages for cheaper replacement crews.
Unions have organised demonstrations against the move on Friday as the DP World-owned company seeks to save money after years of losses.
There were reports of some replacement workers leaving buses taking them to vessels after learning how P&O personnel had been dismissed on Thursday.
