French designer GTT has won approval in principle from Japanese classification society ClassNK for a new membrane-type containment system for liquefied hydrogen (LH2).

GTT said it has developed what it described as a scaleable containment system, which can be adapted to any size of LH2 carrier without major design modifications along with the cargo handling system.

The company said the design — which it described as a “new concept” without giving further details — has been validated on the basis of ClassNK rules accompanied by a risk analysis.
