Shipbuilding and shiprepair, once a fast-growing sector of Turkey’s economy, saw the number of shipyards blossom from 37 in 2002 to 77 in 2015, according to the Ministry of Transport, Maritime Affairs and Communications.

But, hit first by the global economic crisis and weak shipping markets, and subsequently by bad press over an attempted coup in July last year and a string of terrorist attacks that have killed more than 200 and injured hundreds in the past year, yard owners have had to use ingenuity and beefed-up public relations to keep their businesses going.
