South Korea’s plans to reform its shipbuilding and shipowning industries extend to more than just a newbuilding ordering binge.

Thursday saw the Ministry of Oceans & Fisheries officially unveil its five-year plan for supporting Korea’s maritime industries.

While talk of a 200 ship newbuilding program stole all the headlines the reforms also look to bolster the competitiveness of shipowners, according to a review of the major aspects of the reforms by Nomura shipbuilding analyst Jaehyung Choi.
