Containership fires were the hottest topic of discussion at the International Union of Marine Insurance (IUMI) annual gathering in Toronto.

With major cargo-related fires occurring at a rate of around once every month this year, according to IUMI cargo committee head Sean Dalton, it is probably the marine insurance industry’s biggest concern.

IUMI’s figures suggest the largest class of containerships — those over 50,000 gt or in excess of 10,000 teu — has seen the biggest increase in the number of incidents, heightening losses for insurers.
