VLCC are facing possible lay-ups as spot rates average out at their lowest levels in 25 years, although owners with scrubber-fitted tankers are faring much better, according to analysts.
Deutsche Bank's Amit Mehrotra pegged average earnings at $1,000 per day on Monday, down 50% week-on-week and the worst figure for two-and-a-half decades. Meanwhile, Clarksons Platou Securities' assessment came in at $1,800 per day.
