Backlogs are growing at shipyards after a surge in orders means pending contracts have outstripped shipbuilding capacity for the first time in three years.

Investment bank Clarksons Platou Securities said the spate of new deals, mainly for containerships, in the first quarter of 2021 has pushed up newbuilding prices across the board.

The equivalent of 9% of the existing boxship fleet has been contracted over the last six months.
