An independent body to direct and fund research into marine propulsion systems that emit less greenhouse gases (GHGs) will be high on the agenda at the next meeting of the International Maritime Organization (IMO)’s Maritime Environment Protection Committee (MEPC 71) in early July.

The IMO is being urged to establish a research and development programme focusing on advanced technologies by the World Shipping Council, Bimco and the International Parcel Tankers’ Association.
