The administration of US President Donald Trump has sworn in shipping investor Wilbur Ross as commerce secretary, adding to a cabinet that has some of the deepest maritime industry knowledge in recent memory.

Vice President Mike Pence administered the oath of office to the 79-year-old billionaire today after the US Senate voted 72-27 to confirm the nomination.

The major shareholder in Diamond S Shipping and Navigator Holdings had been a key voice on trade during the presidential campaign for Trump, a fellow billionaire who espouses protectionist views and who has promised to shake up trade deals and the relationship with China.
