The IMO needs to clarify whether shipping will be required to decarbonise by choosing to meet either technical and operational goals, or by combining both approaches, a leading academic has told TradeWinds.
But Dr Tristan Smith, reader in energy and shipping at University College London's Energy Institute, has warned that allowing companies to opt for a technical approach, for example, could make operational goals irrelevant, or vice versa.
