An alliance between Japan Marine United (JMU) and Imabari Shipbuilding will create the world’s third-largest shipbuilding group in terms of capacity.

Under the proposed deal, Imabari will take up to 30% of a new JMU share structure, making it one of three main partners alongside JFE Holdings and industrial conglomerate IHI Corp.

Hitachi Zosen will continue as a minority shareholder.
