The small Dutch controlled general cargoship, Marathon, has been released by Somali pirates after 46 days of detention.

Eight Ukrainian seafarers have also been freed but the release brought news of the death of a ninth, Serhiy Vartenkov, during the original pirate assault.

The 2,575-dwt general cargo ship Marathon (built 1976) was seized in the Gulf of Aden in early May while carrying a coke cargo.
