Mediterranean Shipping Co (MSC) is to split six orders for 23,000-teu containerships worth up to $900m between three Chinese shipyards.

Sources said the liner operator has picked Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding (Group), Jiangnan Shipyard and Yangzijiang Shipbuilding to construct two vessels each.

The conventionally fuelled vessels will be fitted with scrubbers and are slated for delivery from 2023.

Officials from the yards were not available for comment.
