Japan's Asahi Tanker claims to have developed the world's first electric zero-emissions tanker.

The "Pure-Electric" E5 vessel has been devised with Exeno-Yamamizu Corporation.

The ship will supply bunkers to vessel trading in Tokyo Bay, with the launch set for the last quarter of 2020.

Coastal ships with a longer range are also being developed.

The E5 concept "creates solutions to issues such as shortage of crews, vessel demand balance and environmental regulation thus contributing to the sustainability of the domestic shipping industry," the companies said.
