As international passenger shipping once again tries to come to terms with the sad ramifications of yet another fateful ferry sinking, recent ratification of the Athens Protocol 2002 and the subsequent entering into force of the Athens Convention 2002 by a number of countries, including the UK, seeks to ensure internationally a single set of liability rules.
This was achieved across the European Union (EU) last year by EU Regulation 392/2009, which governs the rights of carriers and their passengers in the event of an accident.
