Krey Schiffahrts GmbH could be accused of putting too many eggs in one basket by ordering 10 multipurpose ships in China. Not that founder Georg Krey, a naval architect who knows plenty about shipbuilding, is fazed by the $140m investment.

He says he and project partner BBC Chartering & Logistics, majority-owned by Briese Schiffahrts, have done their homework. They know substantial demand still exists for modern, geared multipurpose vessels for the tramp market.
