China’s "One Belt, One Road" could provide increased cargo opportunities in the iron ore and coal trades for small bulkers, delegates were told at yesterday's Singapore Iron Ore Forum.

“China’s 'One Belt, One Road' will connect China to mainland Europe through a lot of emerging markets,” said Vicky Binns, vice-president of marketing minerals at BHP Billiton.

“We do believe that these emerging markets, whether they are places like Vietnam, Thailand or markets further to the west, are going to continue to build their own steel industries — and they will generally be markets that don’t have a lot of their own iron ore or metallurgical coal so it increases overall demand.
