Japanese shipbuilder IHI Corp has launched a ship-design operation in Vietnam in a bid to cut costs and overcome labour shortages.
The new company IHI Engineering Marine Vietnam Ltd will be located in the northern Vietnamese port city of Haiphong. It will be capitalized at JPY 20m ($167,000).
IHI is spending JPY 2.8bn on increasing yard capacity between now and March 2008.
